Changing Your Plan Beneficiary After Retirement
You can change the Plan beneficiary you named when you retired by designating a new beneficiary on the Plan's official Beneficiary Designation Form for Retirees and sending it to your Area Administrative Office. Your new beneficiary designation is not effective unless the appropriate signed form is received by an Area Administrative Office before your death.

If you were married when you retired, and want to name someone other than your spouse as your sole Plan beneficiary, your spouse's consent is required. If you and your spouse have since divorced, your former spouse's consent may still be required. If you retired with a pension effective date before January 1, 1992, spousal consent may not be required. If you have questions about how these rules apply to you, contact your Area Administrative Office.

The easiest way to change your Plan beneficiary after retirement is to call or write your Area Administrative Office. (Remember to provide your Social Security number.) Or, if you have Adobe® Acrobat® Reader™ on your computer, click one of the following to download a copy of the official Beneficiary Designation Form for Retirees:

English version (Adobe® Acrobat® PDF™, 42K)
Versión en Español (Adobe® Acrobat® PDF™, 42K)

Once you download the form to your computer, you can print it, fill it in and mail it back to an Area Administrative Office. (You cannot send the form via e-mail.)

Note: If you retired with a pension effective date before January 1, 1992, you must use a different Beneficiary Designation Form that you may request by contacting your Area Administrative Office.

If you don't have Acrobat Reader installed, you can get the latest version of this free software by clicking the Adobe icon to the left. This takes you to the download page at Adobe's web site.

Note: The rules for naming your Plan beneficiary are different if you have not yet retired. Click here for more information.

Remember, your beneficiary designation is not effective unless the appropriate signed form is received by an Area Administrative Office before your death. If your spouse's consent is required, your designation of some other person as your Plan beneficiary will not be effective unless that consent is received by an Area Administrative Office before your death.
